He died of cancer at his home in Par, aged 55. Born in Oxford and originally known as Nigel Hooper, he moved to Cornwall, where he was educated at Mount Charles Primary, St Austell Grammar School and Launceston College, at which he achieved a distinction in music. His lifelong passion for music gained momentum in his childhood home at Grampound, where he made his first guitar out of an old cigar box and began playing a clarinet. Every night and weekend saw the Hooper household full of skiffle-playing teenagers with guitars, brass instruments, drums and pianos. Spike soon revealed his flair as a multi-instrumentalist, arranger and band leader. His crew cut hair earned him the name "Spike", and his first band was The Saxons. Others to follow included the Senators, Individuals, Soul Society, Jack Russell and the Terriers, Al Hodge's Headquarters and the Flying Tigers. But it was his time as a saxophonist, guitarist and vocalist with rock and roll revivalists Shades that gave Spike a taste of wider recognition and saw his career take off, with a tour of Europe. He was also much in demand as a recording sessionist especially in the Sawmill Studios at Golant, near Fowey. His last visit there was to play on a session for London band Supergrass. Jazz was also a . major part of his life and led to collaborations with many top players, with Spike featuring on sax, clarinet, guitar and banjo. He was also a mainstay of the former Charlestown jazz Club. Soul Society singer Will Coon paid tribute, saying: 'Spike was a true original. "He had a huge talent which inspired a whole generation of young Cornish musicians.' "Spike loved Cornwall and Cornwall loved him." Flying Tigers' guitarist Pete Flaskett, with whom Spike continued to appear until shortly before his death, described Spike as his hero and said that he was a unique character. "He will be missed both socially and musically, but remembered for the joy he brought to many, many thousands of people.' Apart from his music, the modest Spike was a keen collector of stamps and coins and took a great interest in nature and the Cornish countryside. He is survived by his wife Jude and children Julie, Jo, David, Robin and Henry. His funeral service is at 11am on Saturday, July 24, at Tywardreath Parish Church. !FROM THE CORNISH GUARDIAN DATED Thursday, 22 Jul 1999: Rocker Spike loses fight ONE of Comwall's most inspirational post-war musicians, Spike Hooper, has died at his Par home after losing his fight against cancer. He was 55. Oxford-born, Spike attended Mount Charles Primary School and St Austell Grammar School, before going on to Launceston College where he gained a distinction in music. Family reminiscences recall his early years in Grampound as the beginning of a life- long passion for music, starting from when he made his first guitar out of an old cigar box through to his first serious instrument and musical first love the clarinet. Every night and weekends saw the Hooper household full of skiffleplaying teenagers on guitars, brass instruments, drums and piano, Spike already revealing a unique flair as multi-instrumentalist, arranger and band leader. And it was in the mid-50s that the former Nigel Hooper became Spike, thanks to the dramatic effects of a crewcut, the fashion for which, together with rock 'n' roll, were America's most exciting exports at the time. The music had an immediate and lasting effect, resulting in the emergence of Spike's first rock band, The Saxons, in 1957/58. Other St Austell-based combos followed, including The Senators, The Individuals, The Soul Society, Marvellous Kid, and in the 1980s Jack Russell and the Terriers and Al Hodge's Headquarters. It was with 50s rock revivalists Shades that gave Spike a taste of wider recognition. In the early 1970s, the band -Spike, sax/guitar/vocals; Colin Price-Jones, guitar/ vocals; Alan Ross, bass/vocals; and Mike Bunt, drums - took the UK rock'n'roll circuit by storm and went on to tour extensively throughout Europe to rave reviews. Later came the hugely popular Flying Tigers, with which Spike continued to appear until shortly before his death. Between gigs he was an in-demand session player, especially at Golant's Sawmills Studios where his last visit was to play on a session for London band Supergrass. But jazz was also a major influence and led to collaborations with many top players. Featuring on sax, clarinet, guitar and banjo, he was also a mainstay of the former Charlestown Jazz Club where lifelong friendships with every other musician he played with were formed.
