16 | 1809 travelled to Australia with his parents and 2 brothers From the Australian Dictionary of Biography John Hosking (1806-1882), merchant and mayor, was born in London, the third son of John Hosking, master of a Methodist day school, and his wife Ann Elizabeth, nee Mann. The Hosking family accepted an invitation by Rev. Samuel Marsden to take charge of the Orphan School in New South Wales, and Marsden secured an official appointment for John Hosking senior, who arrived in Sydney on 29 January 1809. During their stay in the colony the family took an active part in the Methodist Society and the New South Wales Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge and Benevolence, reorganized in 1818 as the Benevolent Society, but in July 1819 the Hoskings returned to England with their six children in the Surry, possibly because of a quarrel with Marsden. On his return to London, John Hosking senior continued the commercial activities he had begun in the colony; he died at Truro, Cornwall, on 13 September 1850, at the age of 76. Two of Hosking's sons returned to the colony; John Hosking junior arrived in the Sir George Osborne in December 1825 and set up as a merchant in Sydney, having already received a land grant in June. On 16 June 1829 he married Martha Foxlowe, daughter of Samuel Terry. Peter Mann Hosking, a surgeon, arrived in the Sovereign in February 1831 and was appointed dispenser and visiting surgeon to the Sydney Dispensary. On 3 October 1832 he married Eliza, daughter of Reuben Uther; they had three sons and two daughters. Peter Mann Hosking died at Liverpool on 16 December 1858. John Hosking junior first set up business at stores in Pitt Street, and later at Albion Wharf, Sussex Street. His father was the London agent for Eagar & Forbes and John became the partner of John Terry Hughes. The firm of Hughes & Hosking rose rapidly in prosperity; Hosking himself acquired considerable property in Sydney and large country holdings, including the Macquarie Fields estate, Gilimatong station in the Monaro district and Foxlowe estate on the Molonglo River. He was a member of the Southern Cattle Association and held stock both in the Bank of New South Wales and the Sydney Banking Co., of which he was a director in 1841. Like his father, Hosking took an active part in the Methodist Church and was also a shareholder in the Sydney College. In November 1842 Hosking was a candidate in Sydney's first municipal elections, and was elected a councillor for Bourke Ward. When the council met he was elected an alderman and the first mayor of Sydney. In December 1842 he was appointed a magistrate. His political career was ended, however, when in the depression of 1843 Hughes & Hosking became insolvent and brought down with them the Bank of Australia, to which they owed more than 155,000 pounds. Hosking was forced to retire from the corporation and some of his property seems to have been sold. He died at Penrith on 9 September 1882. His wife Martha died on 30 June 1877 at Mount Pleasant, Penrith; they had three daughters. | HOSKING, John (P31881)

Born on May 18, 1963 in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late Curtis “Art” and Lois Ann (Dungey) Aughenbaugh. For most of his life Billy worked in the construction field. 27 | Gilbert was a married Australian railway worker with one child when he joined the Australian Army in Sept 1917. He was posted to England in Aug 1918, and after serving in France, for some unknown reason he was granted 2 months leave with pay, to work on Penstrassoe farm in St.Ewe Parish, Cornwall. (see his part service record). Whilst here, he got local girl Rosie Tonkin pregnant. Gibert returned to Australia in Nov 1919 and Rosie gave birth to Joyce Tonkin 8 months later in Jul 1920. Her birth certificate gives Rosie as mother but no father given. The fact that Gilbert may have been her father was suspected, but it has now been proved with DNA testing. Gilbert went on to have 2 more children in Australia and probably never knew he had a child in England. | HATFIELD, Gilbert Allen (P31601)

28 | Obituary for Lewis Gordon Yelland Unexpectedly, yet peacefully on March 7, 2016, Lewis Gordon Yelland passed away at his residence, at the age of 73 years. Lew was predeceased by his father Gordon, his mother Mildred and his loyal dog Sheba. Dad will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his son, Gordon (Arlene), daughter Rachel, grandson Brandyn and granddaughter Jayme. Dad was retired from of the University of Winnipeg- Maintenance Dept. where he developed some good friendships and often talked fondly about times he shared with those friends. Grandad shared a very special deep bond with his grandson Brandyn. They spent countless hours together, just talking “s**t”. Grandad also spent many years as his granddaughter’s #1 hockey fan. Dad cherished his relationship with both his grandchildren and always enjoyed the time he got to spend with them. Many of Dad’s most memorable years came from spending his summer’s at his cabin in Minaki, Ontario, with his “River Hog buddies” where he was well known as “The Boss Hog”. In later years Dad truly enjoyed his daily visits with his long time best Bud, Ken MacKenzie. A quote from Ken “I am gonna miss you big time Bud!!” The family would also like to Thank Ken for being such a loyal friend to our Father. Cremation has taken place, and in keeping with Dad’s wishes, there will be no service. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or the Winnipeg Humane society. | YELLAND, Lewis Gordon (P38145)

32 | Thomas remarried in 1869 to Ann MYNARD, widow of William ROBERTS That Thomas was born in Oct 1809 is confirmed by his recorded age in the census returns. Thomas himself gives his birth date as Oct 1809 in a 1907 newspaper article, and also when applying for his old age pension. However the Excise Officer appears to have misread his baptism entry as 1808, so making him 1 year older. Subsequent newspaper reports of his death, and his headstone, give his age as 100. | WILLIAMS, Thomas (P36545)

43 | This information is given to clarify the complicated parentage of Elizabeth Newton HAILSTONE David HAILSTONE married Phoebe Elizabeth WRIGHT in Hull in 1874. They had 2 children, Francis John 1875-1875 and Maria 1876. Sometime between 1876 and 1881 David left Phoebe and his family in Hull and around 1881 moved to Pennsylvania, USA. He bigamously married Louise GEORGE, had 9 children and died in 1917 in Pennsylvania. Benjamin Fieldhouse NEWTON married Charlotte RUTTER in Manchester in 1860. They had 3 children, William 1861, John 1866 and Benjamin 1872. Sometime between 1872 and 1881 Benjamin left Charlotte and his family in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, and moved back to his home town of Hull. Charlotte bigamously married William Edward KIRMAN in Grimsby in 1886 falsely stating she was a widow. She died in 1918 in Grimsby. Benjamin and Phoebe had an illegitimate daughter together, Elizabeth Newton HAILSTONE in Hull in 1881. Benjamin, Phoebe, Maria and Elizabeth moved to Cardiff. Wales, where they had another illegitimate daughter Mary Ann NEWTON in 1887. Benjamin and Phoebe never married, but in the 1891 census they are listed as being married, and are with their daughters Elizabeth and Mary Ann. For some reason the family are listed under the surname of WARD. Phoebe changed her name to NEWTON, Benjamin died in 1893, Maria married William FOURACRE in 1897, Elizabeth changed her name to Lizzie NEWTON and married Julian RICHARDS in 1902, Mary Ann married Arthur REED in 1908 and Phoebe died in 1924. | HAILSTONE, Elizabeth Newton (P6282)
